Dornoch,
Scotland

Dornoch
is a famed golfIng resort and Royal Burgh, with a good bathing
beach and sands, looking over the Dornoch Firth, into which a
narrow spit of land projects erminating at Dornoch Point. Only
the lofty tower is still standing
from the Bishop’s Castle, destroyed in 1570. The old Cathedral
dates from 1224, the choir having been
probably completed c. 1539.
After
severe damage in 1570, and later much neglect, considerable restorations
took place, first in 1835 to 1837, and latterly in 1924. No fewer
than 16 Earls of Sutherland are said to he buried in the Cathedral,
and there is a statue by Chantrey of the first Duke. Dornoch
was the scene, in 1722, of the last judicial execution for
witchcraft to take place in Scotland, the Witch’s Stone
on the golf course recalling the event. North of Dornoch is the
late 18th century, mansion of Embo House.
