Deacon Brodie

Deacon Brodie
(1741—1788)

Thief

By day a respected Edinburgh artisan and town councillor, by night a gambler and burglar, William Brodie led the archetypal double life. He was only caught when one of his gang turned king’s evidence and was hanged in Edinburgh. Robert Louis Stevenson was said to have based Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on his life.
