Scottish
Marriage Tradition
There
was a person in the eastern part of Scotland, who had fallen into
a certain degree of discredit only a few years ago, from declining
to uodergo a ceremony not uncommon in earlier times.
On
the morning after marriage, the youth of both sexes, or perhaps
females, were the principal participators, assembled along with
the new married pair. A basket was transmitted among them, and
gradually filled with stones, until reaching the bridegroom, when
it was suspended from his neck. Then receiving some additional
load, his affectionate helpmate, to testify her sense of the caresses
he had lavished on her, cut the cord and relieved him of this
oppressive burden.
