Cairns
(m) A Scottish surname derived from a place-
name, probably the lands of Cairns in the parish of Mid-
Calder, Midlothian, as Black (Surnames of Scotland) sug-
gests. A ‘cairn’ is a heap of stones which is raised
over a
grave, of which acts as a landmark. Cairns is occasionally
used in Scotland as a Christian name.
