Butcher
Cumberland

At
the battle of Cullodn, when the Highlanders were forced to retreat,
the Frasers marched off with banners flying and pipes playing
in the face of the enemy. After the battle, Charles Fraser, younger
of Inverallochy, the lieutant—colonel of the Fraser regiment,
was savagely slain by order of the Duke of Cumberland.
When
riding over the field, the duke observed this brave
youth lying wounded. Raising himself upon his elbow, he looked
at the duke, when the latter thus addressed
one of his officers, who afterwards became a more distinguished
commander than himself:
“Wolfe,
shoot me that Highland scoundrel who thus dares to look on us
with so insolent a stare.”
Wolfe
replied, that his commission was at his royal highness’
disposal, but that he would never consent to become an executioner.
Other
officers refusing to committ this act of butchery, a private soldier
at the inhumao command of the duke, shot the hapless youth before
his eyes.
