Robert
Burns The Gauger

When
Robert Bums was a “gauger” in Dumfries, nformation
had been lodged at the excise office against a
woman who kept a small public-house in Thornhill. Next day, fair
day, was fixed for the officers to visit it; the
house was crowded; Burns came suddenly to the back door, and said
to the laodlady:
“Kate, woman, are you mad ?, the supervisor and me will
be on you in half an-hour,” and disappeared. There was
not much liquor seized when the visit was made.
