Blair Atholl
Map
of this area
The
last place of any size on the Great North Road. prior to following
Wade's highway through Glen Garry and the Pass of Drumochter to
Speyside. The village was removed from the vicinity of its main
attraction, Blair Castle, in the 18C.
Mill
In
this corn mill (rebuilt following a fire in 1981), the exhibits
trace the different stages of milling from hopper room to basement.
Atholl
Country Collection
The
Old School. This small but well presented local museum gives an
insight to life in Atholl of yesteryear. Exhibits range from a
domestic interior to agricultural implements and tools of such
rapidly disappearing craftsmen as blacksmiths and wheelwrights.
Falls
of Bruar
3
miles to the west. Riverside paths on both sides and two bridges
allow the visitor to go up one side and down the other. Both paths
afford good views of the rushing water and deep pools as the Bruar
Water follows its channel through solid rock.
Clan
Donnachaidh Museum
Beyond
the Falls of Bruar on the main road. The museum tells the clan
story and that of its chiefs who descend from the Celtic earls
of Atholl. Among the early chiefs was Stout Duncan whose contribution
at the Battle of Bannockburn proved decisive. From his great grandson.
Robert, came the surname Robertson. Clan Donnachaidh includes
the septs Robertson, Duncan, Reid and other associated families.
Also illustrated are clan country, the work of the Clan Society
and prominent clansmen and women, both at home and overseas.
