Big
Donald
”
Big Donald,” a noted character in the Sutherland Fencibles,
happened one night to be placed as sentry over a piece of weaponry,
which, on account of its weight, would have required three or
four ordinary men to move it. He had not been long at his post,
however, when his comrades, who were enjoying themselves at the
guard-room fire, were astonished at his entrance with the huge
instrument of warfare on his shoulder.
On
being asked what he meant by deserting his post, Donald replied:
“Why, what ‘s the use, lads, of standing Out there
in such a cold night as this, watching this bit of metal, when
I can watch it as well in here and keep myself warm too?”
