Barbara
(f) From a Greek word meaning ‘strange,
foreign.’ It is well used in Scotland, but a name common
to all Christian countries. In Scotland it was i6th most
frequently given name in 1858, 23rd in 1935, 42nd in 1958.
The
name was immensely popular in the U.S.A. and
Canada from 1925-50, and in England and Wales from
1935-55. Diminutive forms include Bab, Babs, Babbie,
Barbie and, in Scotland, Baubie.
