“Thomson!
you must be a Scotsman, I’ll warrant ?“
said Wilkie to Henry Thomson, as they sat together
for the first time at the Academy dinner.
“I’m
of that ilk, sir,” was the reply; “my father was a
Scotsman.”
“Was
he, really?” exclaimed Wilkie, grasping the other’s
band quite brotherly.
“And
my mother was Irish.”
“Was
she really?” and the hand relaxed its fervour.
“And
I was born in England.”
Wilkie
let go Thomson’s hand altogether, turned his back on him,
and indulged in no further conversation.
