Applecross,
Scotland

Applecross
is a remote West Highland village at the foot of wild hills, situated
on Applecross Bay, facing the island of Raasay in the Inner Sound,
beyond which lies Skye. The patron saint, named Maelrubha, or
Maree, founded a monastery here in AD. 673, being later buried
in the little Church north of the village. Motor boats from Kyle
of Lochalsh serve Toscaig, which lies some 4 miles to the south,
at the head of the small inlet of Loch Toscaig.
By
road, the only approach is over the famous 2,054-ft. Pass of the
Cattle, a most difficult route, and liable to be blocked by snow
in winter. The descent from the summit of the pass to Applecross
Bay is without serious difficulty. Beyond Loch Toscaig he the
three small Crowlin Islands. A walkers’ track goes northwards
from Applecross to the mouth of Outer Loch Torridon, giving splendid
views, and continuing in an easterly direction to Shieldaig, on
the loch of that name, looking towards the splendid Torridon mountains.
