Aberfeldy
Map
of this area
The
small Highland Perthshire town of Aberfeldy. pleasantly set in
Strath Tay, was immortalised by Burns, who advised:
"Come let us spend the lichtsome days
In the birks of Aberfeldy"
and the deep pools and majestic waterfalls of the Birks (birches),
"o 'erhung wi" fragrant spreading snaws "Just outside the town.
remain one of its most popular attractions.
Aberfeldy Water Mill
Water from the Birks is led through a 1 500ft - 500m tunnel to
power the big overshot water-wheel of this restored early-19C
mill in the centre of the town. Inside, atmospheric rumblings
and creakings accompany the grinding of oats, while displays emphasise
the importance of this hardy crop in the Scottish diet (porridge,
biscuits, haggis...). Water Mill web

General
Wade's Bridge
This elegant five-arched bridge adorned with obelisks was built,
some say. to designs of William Adam. by General Wade to carry
his military road north from Crieff to Dalwhinnie. Black Watch
Monument - The kilted figure, dressed in a uniform of the time,
commemorates the formation of the Black Watch Regiment in 1739
by the amalgamation of six Independent Companies. The monument
marks the site of the first parade.
Castle Menzies
This 16C Z-plan castle, which has been repeatedly besieged in
the course of Scotland's turbulent history, was the chief seat
of the Menzies until some 80 years ago when the main line died
out. In 1959 the Menzies Clan Society took over and restoration
which has been in progress since 1971 is now nearly complete.
There are two fine plasterwork ceilings.
St Mary's Church
2 miles northeast of Aberfeldy. signposted off A 827. Take the
farm road up to Pitcairn Farm. Electric time switch; handboards
available. The 16C church, a low unassuming whitewashed edifice,
stands behind the farm buildings. Inside is an extraordinary 17C
painted ceiling* (covers only half of the roof). The elaborate
design includes heraldic devices of local Stewart landowners,
Biblical texts, the Evangelists, all interspersed with vases,
fruit, flowers and cherubs. The colours are clear but the figure
drawing is crude in comparison with the assurance of the heraldic
and other geometric designs.
